Reports of our weekly meetings


President Brian welcomed all to tonight’s meeting, his last meeting as President. Thought for the Day was delivered by John Anderson, highlighting the year just passed and about to be reflected on. Business Matters President Elect reported on attending the 1010 conference at the Rothes Halls. Various presentations, some good and some less so! First up was a “real time” presentation on help in Ukraine, followed by two garden projects, concluding on presentation from our President covering our centenary year, which was the best the day (evident by the approaches Brian had later in the day to present to others and to take on some Area & District posts). Powerful presentation on chemical warfare from Armenian and Iraqi ladies who are peace ambassadors. Also, the presentation by Perth on their international project in India’s red-light districts where they are helping to take kids off the street. However, the Ukrainian lady now in Scotland who read a letter from her husband at home was the most hard hitting of the morning. John Anderson reported on the Purvis visit. He and others were blown away with the business expansion and the diversity of businesses they run. This visit keeps our close ties strong with the team at Purvis who are keen to continue partnering with us. Letter from Dunfermline High School on annual awards, see attached scan. Thank you to Graham Steedman for facilitating the electrical connectivity for the newly install defibrillator at St Andrews Erskine Church. Good Press coverage continues with article and picture on outgoing and incoming president, incoming Senior Vice President, and Area Governor. Treasurer reported to all in attendance the challenge with card payment for meal payments and the work around where he has to paying for all meals personally and then transferring money from Rotary account to him as recompense. Enquiring about a Business Card he uncovered we need to have a new general account, which will only be single signatory. This needs club approval for this new account and Business Card application, which was received from all Rotarians in attendance. Presentation Our departing President then gave an excellent Valedictory of the very busy year just past, where it is worth mentioning the £40,000 Rotary Club of Dunfermline has given to charity in this year just past. President Brian then concluded in the normal manner by awarding Rotarian of the Year, this time to two people, David Fraser, and John Sim. VOT Ralph McCran delivered an innovative vote of thanks, taking on the role of Headmaster, robes and all, giving an end of year report to former Headmaster Brian, AKA Our Head Boy. 1st exam pass was mid-August when Brian was able to secure our return to Garvock House Hotel. Charter Dinner exam was a challenge, especially due to some truancy attending previous charter dinners study events, however a pass mark was secured. The final exam pass was also gained for the Summer Ball, despite a few disrupting students “skiving off”. Final summary report was - Brian should be very proud of what he achieved in what was a very successful year, in no small part due to Brian’s hard work, helping us to emerge from the Pandemic as a more energetic, vibrant club.

Thought for the Day was delivered by Tom Sunter. An interesting new approach by first character assassinating some Rotarians, before finishing a positive note on our future outlook. I am told the rhyme made up with comments for Ronnie Pooke and thing that rhymed were held back for another day! Business Matters Mike Williams reported on Edinburgh Rotary Golf Day @ Brunsfield. Our team was made up of Ralph McCran, Mike Williams, Keith McFarlane and Danny McLaughlin, who was a late substitute for David Gemmill. 4th overall, however performance more than made up for in raffle draw were the team cleaned up, with raised questions round the room. Keith McFarlane reported, details on Dumbarnie Golf Links day out becoming clearer. £87 per head. 24 spaces, and plan is to ask Rotarians who would like to attend first, and then open to guests. Date for golfers diaries, 1st October. December meetings dates were shared with Rotarians in advance by John Sim in Ronnie Pooke’s absence. This was to allow members to tell us their preference when our last meeting prior to Christmas should be. 4th December Christmas Lunch 8th December Thursday Meeting 15th December No meeting as clash with Marine Band Concert 17th & 18 December Santas Sleigh (to be confirmed) 22nd December Thursday Meeting Question, do we still have meeting on 22nd despite this being so close to Christmas and lots on in December. Vote in the room outcome was yes, we should meet on 22nd. Secretary to advise hotel, Programme to think about something suitable for that evening and we look forward to an excellent turn out! Presentation Our new President gave an unscripted speech on plans for coming year. Great attendance on such a beautiful evening, although five from eleven council members were not in attendance. After a year celebrating and reflecting, he is keen we move our focus back to evolving and maturing our club, continuing being one of the most healthy and active clubs in our District. President Ralph also outlined plans for each area that are well advanced or concluding for delivery.

John Anderson’s thought for the day highlighted the worth waiting for tech thriller that was to follow “after our food”. Business Matters David Fraser reported while doing a check and balance of meal payments last week he noticed one member had their account deducted twice for the meal. David has no means of identifying who this was, so asks members to check their bank accounts and if they find duplicate deductions, to reach out to David and let him know. President Ralph shared comparison with our coming years plans to RI President Jennifer Jones imagine statements “where members act to make their dreams reality and to get the most out of their club experiences”. Secretary was impressed he had read what is a very long email, and section Ralph read out is at the bottom of this meeting note. Announcement David Lyth let members know he and Helen have decided to put their house in Townhill up for sale and move to Edinburgh. They both love living in Dunfermline, however, agree with their daughter it would be better to live closer. They do also have four grandchildren in Dunfermline they look after, so hopes he can still attend Thursday meetings. Best Santa I ever saw, so hopefully we can still rely on David’s services at Santa’s Sleigh time. So easy to find and no excuses. Worth highlighting to people when you perform a member’s logon, use the Template Login option. We would like all members to logon at least once. While it asks for a username, you should be able to use your email address and Rotary password - if you have set one! Bill also intimated he intends to stand down as our web administrator in the next year, so important we get somebody (preferably more than one) to take on ownership of our RIBI webpages. The Harvieston room was buzzing with another excellent attendance and only 1 seat in the room unfilled. Joan Fraser from Inner Wheel was a very welcome guest to hear our guest speaker Sandra Beveridge the organiser of Dunfermline Foodbank. There were excellent menu choices including pork and either seabass or sea bream - we argued about that on our table as no one could recall for certain. You will be surprised to learn that Charlie complained. This week it was the size of his fish which he thought was a tiddler. Eric suggested that an illegal net had been used as a fish that size would surely have escaped easily from a legally sized net. Sean made his debut giving us a Thought for the Day. Members overwhelmingly applauded Sean's ditty and look forward to encores in the future as part of the Thought for the Day team - the door is always open to others to join this prestigious team of John, Ian & Sean. The most important announcement of the evening was the monthly draw winners - £60 Jack & £40 Russell - well done gents. Andrew Watson attended with a box overflowing with new directories for distribution to members. They are stored in the lectern and will be distributed further at future meetings. He welcomed our Inner Wheel guests, soon to be inducted Jim Millar and Martin Rowan who had contacted us direct via the web site to explore membership. He also had a late light bulb moment, where he welcomed Lyndsey, AKA the current First Lady! Sean Doran gave his second thought for the day covering the Jack Vettriano exhibition visit, tonight’s fellowship and presenter, The Par’s two games undefeated run, the medal haul for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games and finished with a well worded closing rhyme. Well done, Sean. Business Matters Ronnie reported on the developing Programme, highlighting the potential Beer Festival visit on 6th October. Names will be required ASAP as decision is necessary in two weeks and he asks for members to watch for email coming out over the coming days. The Bavaria package is £21. This is a great event to invite potential new members along to! Also, on 16th September there is to be a wine tasting at Rubens. Numbers are limited to twelve pairs, so will be first come first served for this ever-popular event. Heads up to book slot in your diary. Keith McFarlane reported on dates being concluded for the remaindered of this year’s golf season. Friendly 4somes, Sunday 4th September - 4pm tee-off (gather approx 3:30). Fish and Chips after at Dunfermline Golf Club, Pitfirrane. Email already sent to all members for this event to attract the non-golfers, so please respond to Keith ASAP. togmcf@hotmail.com. Also, 1st October Dumbarnie visit will be used for our own club championship – watch for details coming. John Allan reported on last week’s Jack Vettriano exhibition visit, with three rooms of paintings, starting from his initial work signed as Jack Hogan. The visit was followed by a trip to the Pane E Vino for some sustenance. Thank you to Alan Condie for coordinating this outside event. Neil Wilson was invited to report on Community, as he had been engaged with District on idea sharing. For us we have our Daffodil tea that was of interest to others, and our growing involvement with Dunfermline Foodbank. We have 14 names of people offering to drive a delivery van and 16 offering to support the December (1st - 3rd) Food Drive at local Supermarkets. Thank you everyone for volunteering your free time to support this worthy cause. Going forward. Neil is exploring ideas round Rotarians mentoring young people’s careers with development suggestions and support. Going back to the foodbank, Ian Morris is helping explore us following the same approach the Pars 1885 club ran in the past with a club members food drive over two weeks, using our Thursday meetings for collection. Presentation Greg Sanders, Advocate at the Bar, gave an excellent presentation of his career progression, sharing his "experiences" from the courtroom and beyond. Vote of Thanks was delivered by Ian Morris, who along with a well prepared in advance VOT ready to deliver as usual, as observed by the Secretary Ian was quick on his feet adjusting, including a VOT thanks for the Presidents long introduction!

John Anderson gave his thought for the day, mentioning the Pars continued success (sec - key tests in coming weeks) and the Rotary Foodbank Boost. Business Matters There was a Council Meeting held on Monday 15th, so for this fellowship meeting all post holders were asked to provide a summary for members. Secretary Highlighted to all that the Hotel are increasing the meal price from £16 to £18 (will mean £19 charged each week to Rotarians) in September. Council had been aware and explored various alternatives, however room charges at other venues, and hotel flexibility with our attendee numbers drove decision to remain at Garvock. Email sent out some time ago resulted in a small number of people volunteering to help Round Table with their Charity Beer Festival on 24th September. It did also ask for people to note in their diaries, so follow on note to be sent to finalise names / numbers we can share with Round Table. Membership Recent new member inducted. Martin in attendance after contacting us via the website. Three others are being approached, however, all male so we need to find a way to broaden engagement to have a more diverse club. 41 Club & Round Table relations continue to receive focus, hence ask for members to support Beer Festival. Invite to be sent to this target group to join us for Oktoberfest outside event on 6th October. Sway with business card containing QR code as used at Alloa being reworked in order that data on website landing page is more appropriate to Dunfermline and structed to be more succinct. Corporate membership, we are now looking to conclude on this with three business’s being actively explored. Treasurer Virgin Money are now starting to introduce bank changes to charity accounts, and this is being observed for other banks also. For now, monitoring, however in future we may take on burden of moving to another bank that charges less going forward (not a short-term offer). Community Foodbank – phenomenal support from Rotarians for upcoming December Food Drive, with 21 volunteers. For weekly drivers to move food between depots, we have 13 volunteers Daffodil Tea as reinstated by Bill Spence this year will continue, with focus on knowledge transfer to new volunteers to help coordinate in Easter 2023 Hand Picked initiative where Rotarian’s will mentor and support young people on career development, Neil is meeting Morag McKay from CR Smith on Monday and looking over our historic info from when we supported such an initiative in the past. Fund Raising (get your diaries our for some key dates) Santa Dash tied in with Christmas lights switch on looks like will not be possible as Council are doing this on Thursday 24th November this year, to align with planned City status celebrations, so for us we will move closer to Christmas, with suggested date of 10th December. Does bring marshalling overhead. Santas Sleigh on the High Street is 17th December. Also plan to be in Tesco’s car park from 20th – 23rd December. Marine Band Concert, contract negotiations concluding for concert on 14th and 15th December. Abbey is booked in readiness. Quiz Night at Rugby Club makes a return thanks to Brian Blanchflower who has volunteered to coordinate. Pencilled in date is 4th November Then we have dates in 2023 for Charity Golf event and Gin Festival. This brings our activities back up to pre-Covid levels, so hopefully we will easily exceed the £20k raising in 2021/22. Programme Rotarians to watch for email coming with listing of events that are ticketed, so commitment in advance required. Keith is owning Golf Days with Couples Golf, Sunday 4th September, Dumbarnie visit will be used for our own club championship on 1st October, Friendly 4Somes on 16th October, Rotary Club of St Andrews Kilrymont Charity Date over Jubilee Course at St.Andrews on 31st October Gordon is covering social with committee arranging Wine Tasting on 16th September, Tapas Ducal with Partners night on 18th November and Christmas Lunch on 4th December Plea to all Rotarians for speakers. While the Programme Committee are arranging from their network, it does not cover all our weekly meetings, so please let Ronnie know of any other possibles we can reach out to. International / Foundation Project submitted to plant circa 2000 trees at various primary schools within Lang’ata district, Kenya. Show Boxes, we already have boxes from previous years, although need to estimate what we need this year, so members please advise Sean of your needs. Access into schools hoped for, although need to identify suitable schools. Business Matters There was a Council Meeting held on Monday 15th, so for this fellowship meeting all post holders were asked to provide a summary for members. Secretary Highlighted to all that the Hotel are increasing the meal price from £16 to £18 (will mean £19 charged each week to Rotarians) in September. Council had been aware and explored various alternatives, however room charges at other venues, and hotel flexibility with our attendee numbers drove decision to remain at Garvock. Email sent out some time ago resulted in a small number of people volunteering to help Round Table with their Charity Beer Festival on 24th September. It did also ask for people to note in their diaries, so follow on note to be sent to finalise names / numbers we can share with Round Table. Membership Recent new member inducted. Martin in attendance after contacting us via the website. Three others are being approached, however, all male so we need to find a way to broaden engagement to have a more diverse club. 41 Club & Round Table relations continue to receive focus, hence ask for members to support Beer Festival. Invite to be sent to this target group to join us for Oktoberfest outside event on 6th October. Sway with business card containing QR code as used at Alloa being reworked in order that data on website landing page is more appropriate to Dunfermline and structed to be more succinct. Corporate membership, we are now looking to conclude on this with three business’s being actively explored. Treasurer Virgin Money are now starting to introduce bank changes to charity accounts, and this is being observed for other banks also. For now, monitoring, however in future we may take on burden of moving to another bank that charges less going forward (not a short-term offer). Community Foodbank – phenomenal support from Rotarians for upcoming December Food Drive, with 21 volunteers. For weekly drivers to move food between depots, we have 13 volunteers Daffodil Tea as reinstated by Bill Spence this year will continue, with focus on knowledge transfer to new volunteers to help coordinate in Easter 2023 Hand Picked initiative where Rotarian’s will mentor and support young people on career development, Neil is meeting Morag McKay from CR Smith on Monday and looking over our historic info from when we supported such an initiative in the past. Fund Raising (get your diaries our for some key dates) Santa Dash tied in with Christmas lights switch on looks like will not be possible as Council are doing this on Thursday 24th November this year, to align with planned City status celebrations, so for us we will move closer to Christmas, with suggested date of 10th December. And Tom’s overall responsibility for all naval movements on the water ways round Northern Ireland, including hunting for people smuggling fertilizer as ingredient for Semtex in a bomb. However, Secretary gave up as the stories kept coming, putting down his pen and enjoyed a well crafted presentation from Tom and David. This program was established to focus on youth employment opportunity / support development for school leavers or young unemployed. Initially Gerard went out to other companies to encourage them to employ young people, with response being most school leavers do not want to work, do not have required skills, just not job ready. Gerard pointed out that young people do have skills they need, but employers need to employ young people to develop / train to employer needs and become job ready. Gerard was successful signing up numerous companies to support, in turn establishing a program dedicated to helping young people. The support program is run over 9 weeks, a school term, to take young people through a structed education format where everything from CV and covering letter, to actual interview is covered. They support approximately 80 people per year. The intention is to give young people the skills to apply for work and grab employers’ attention. Kevin Richards (Past West Fife President) then shared his experiences as a volunteer who goes into schools to deliver the 9 week program, which is very structed with supporting material to ensure consistent delivery. To prepare volunteers, they attend a training session at the CR Smith premises. The main objective to start with is to get the young people’s attention, often overcoming challenging personalities, then encouraging them to share personal information that could potentially be included within covering letters to grab employers’ attention as they work their applicant CV review process. Sessions are run focusing on interview preparation, with mock interview day, including waiting in reception, and being taken to interview room! At end of program, they also have a workbook to take home that is a great tool for job applications going forward. There are number of Dunfermline central employers engaged, but also large national and multinational companies who in some cases may also provide work experience days. If Rotarians are keen to explore this volunteering opportunity, please contact Neil Wilson who will coordinate on our behalf with the Hand Picked team. The main objective to start with is to get the young people’s attention, often overcoming challenging personalities, then encouraging them to share personal information that could potentially be included within covering letters to grab employers’ attention as they work their applicant CV review process. Sessions are run focusing on interview preparation, with mock interview day, including waiting in reception, and being taken to interview room! At end of program, they also have a workbook to take home that is a great tool for job applications going forward. There are number of Dunfermline central employers engaged, but also large national and multinational companies who in some cases may also provide work experience days. If Rotarians are keen to explore this volunteering opportunity, please contact Neil Wilson who will coordinate on our behalf with the Hand Picked team. David F when announcing the monthly draw highlighted the danger of eating spaghetti whilst wearing a shirt. David spoke a few months ago on his main role with the British Heart Foundation and many members spoke afterwards of how entertaining he was. Member retention appears to be a running challenge, and Allan would like to know more about views of our club members. To help with this he has triggered a members survey to better understand members wants and he will share the outcome when people have responded. While it asks for email address, Allan will maintain anonymity when he reports to members on their collective desires for the future of our club. There are also plans for Council to perform a health check on our club as via assessment tools available. Ian started as a YTS at Almore Carpets as a fitter. Great foundation as he learnt lots about the carpet trade prior to moving into sales. He bought the business when he was 26 years old. Tonight, standing in front of friends and customers, he is keen to explain to all his OCD diagnosis. Ian worked very long hours, more than most, as his OCD primary symptom of compulsion meant he had to make sure everything was correct, covered and checked, including the small stuff. His preference for long to do lists, including making use of lists written on his hands as he went, helped him manage the stress of running a business. People with OCD are very good at their jobs because of desire to do everything to such a high level. That does however generate its own stress, making OCD worse and the vicious circle continues While Ian enjoyed his work, age does have an impact on all of us being able to absorb stress to the level we could when younger, and time had come to retire. Ian can report he is much better now retired. VOT was delivered by Gerry Gillespie, who like all of us was a customer of Ian’s, referring to his keenness to get use out of the 25 year guarantee for carpets bought! He congratulated Ian on opening up to his friends in attendance on his life with OCD. His current career is autonomous cars, but he spoke about Artificial Intelligence (AI), AKA The March of the Machines (not his words). He took Rotarians on an interesting history of AI, also explaining levels of AI – Narrow Intelligence, which is performing a single task, like call centre screening. Weak AI, which would be something like a satnav in your car. Artificial General Intelligence, which is where we are now with more advanced systems in use. Artificial Super Intelligence, which is the future. We all come across AI continually in our day to day life and it is becoming more and more advanced, so much so we start to not notice. Streaming options from Youtube / Netflix based on your history showing personal preferences, immediate decisions on finance applications, Shazam app for telling you details of a song just via listening to a few lines. He went on to explain Chat GPT and the power of the tool today and they way this will be improving even further in the next release. If anyone would like to see the power of AI in pictures, try installing Google Lens and point it at something you do not know about. VOT was delivered by the Secretary. It was reassuring that despite these examples of bleeding edge technology, we all get caught out, like our presented, by a faulty cable, in tonight’s case a cable to connect a laptop to an overhead projector (hence the poor backup we ended up using). The Secretary was also able to quote examples from his and Matt Brown’s working life at IBM and the Watson AI solution that famously took on the champions of the US Jeopardy quiz - and won. Watson @ IBM has become the corner stone of their AI development. Business Matters President Ralph reported on Ginfest. 55 people over the course of the weekend helped, including 16 Inner Wheelers. As an organisation we are blessed with a depth of support that allows us to put on such an event, that this year is estimated to deliver a £18,000 profit, that will be donated to various charities. In 2019 we delivered £10,000 profit for our first in year, and in 2022 our return after covid was £16,000 profit. Centre spread this week in Dunfermline Press for Ginfest and we are informed there will be an article in The Courier. All great publicity for our club. 2024 data to be set soon. Charity Donations, we need nominations for consideration by Friday 26th May please. Andrew Watson reported on the Garden Party, which cannot occur as planned at The Keavil House Hotel due to them now hosting Ukrainian refugees. He is looking to secure the services of Garvock House Hotel, hopefully on the same date – watch for details. Andrew also reported he had recently seen Eric Keenan who although suffering from Long Covid continues to be on the mend, now getting out and about and hopefully back with us at Rotary soon. John Sim reported on some visits. He, President Ralph and Sean Doran attended the recent Round Table AGM, where Thomas Docherty was “passing out”. This helps with keeping bridges open for future members. At the AGM the £14,000 profit for their Beer Festival was reported, also highlighting Round Table could not have delivered on their obligations for Saturday night without the help of Rotary. There is also a Clyde Group with four boats, now five. 29th April was first day sail, with three boats heading to Rothesay for a meal at The Black Bull. Crew assigned to Barolo were a couple from Howe of Fife Rotary club, who via an Albert Bartlett annual donation of potatoes raise a good amount of money for charity. There are more sailing events scheduled and John, Jane and Barolo plan to attend where they can. Worth people watching for these fellowship groups to broaden your Rotary experience. Team plus what for now is a “substitute” selected, who will travel to venue in Forfar / Brechin area and hopefully come home with the spoils of victory. Finally, as per feedback received when membership survey results were reviewed last week, social media use was examined. WhatsApp specifically, which is now regarded as an important tool, underpinning emails, allowing for much quicker communications when required. Use and material shared to date, has on some occasions not been to everyone’s appreciation. The WhatsApp group is now renamed Rotary Official. A Code of Conduct has been drafted, but decision taken to not share for now, instead setting member use guidance based on what we would deem appropriate for distribute via email communications for club material. This was agreed and accepted by all for WhatsApp group use by members. AOCB Ronnie raised the question of a donation to Russell Matthews nominated charity after his recent passing. There was no collection for a charity at Russell’s funeral, so not clear where we would donate to. Secretary to reach out to Russell’s family for a charity and it was agreed we would donate £250. It was also suggested there should be a standing order for Rotary default donations in such an event. However, that will need to wait for the next SGM where it can be an agenda item. David Steele ended the business meeting by thanking members for his Honorary Membership awarded at this evening’s AGM. David has been a member for 22 years after his retirement from The Navy and values membership as much now as he did then. We will explore food options changes when in GHH through the Rotary year – i.e., buffet evenings. Finally, as per feedback received when membership survey results were reviewed last week, social media use was examined. WhatsApp specifically, which is now regarded as an important tool, underpinning emails, allowing for much quicker communications when required. Use and material shared to date, has on some occasions not been to everyone’s appreciation. The WhatsApp group is now renamed Rotary Official. A Code of Conduct has been drafted, but decision taken to not share for now, instead setting member use guidance based on what we would deem appropriate for distribute via email communications for club material. This was agreed and accepted by all for WhatsApp group use by members. AOCB Ronnie raised the question of a donation to Russell Matthews nominated charity after his recent passing. There was no collection for a charity at Russell’s funeral, so not clear where we would donate to. Secretary to reach out to Russell’s family for a charity and it was agreed we would donate £250. It was also suggested there should be a standing order for Rotary default donations in such an event. However, that will need to wait for the next SGM where it can be an agenda item. David Steele ended the business meeting by thanking members for his Honorary Membership awarded at this evening’s AGM. David has been a member for 22 years after his retirement from The Navy and values membership as much now as he did then. TFTD Sean Doran provided his thought for the day, covering hackers, El Nino effect on weather causing hot feet and thirst, and tonight concluding on our donations from GinFest profit after recent members vote. Business Matters Treasurer David reported that 16 votes had been received for the member suggested charities to receive a donation. Agreed approach was top two would get £2,000 and next six would get £1000 each. The results in no order are as follows – £2000 to Maggies Fife & Dunfermline Foodbank £1000 to Dunfermline Mens Shed, Shiresmill Therapy RC, Friends of Pittencrieff Park, Pancreatic Cancer, Talk Matters, Rotary Foundation, Motor Neurone Disease, Samaritans This is in addition to the 25% share of profit rounded up to nearest £100 given to Inner Wheel. Graham Steedman publicized Ralph’s swansong event, the upcoming Garden Party at the Garvock House Hotel. He and Andrew Watson are looking for more attendees, needing another 20 names. A rich and varied year for them – Establishing Safe Space, for supporting pupils with mental health challenges. Equalities Group established, who in turn were able to set up a prayer / reflection room. This was after identifying and considering the needs of other faith group pupils who had other commitments and events to celebrate. Meeting and sharing opinions with MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville. Taking part on the 950th anniversary of Dunfermline Abbey, where they met Princess Anne, took part on drama festival and were in attendance for the Kings visit. Senior Boys mental health assembly established to encourage more boys to speak out. Pertinent to Noah’s future plans, which is to study Phycology and Counselling at Strathclyde. Secretary Note Other schools in Dunfermline were invited, but we were not able to conclude. Team is looking to bring forward in the calendar the Head Girl / Boy presentations next year to just after the Easter break, therefore not interfering with exam time and being well away from end of school year events. VOT Was delivered by Alan Mitchell, who decided not to probe if Noah’s loss of voice was due to over exuberance at the end of year prom at Balbirnie. He also complimented them on their talk and handling questions from the floor, operating well outside their comfort zone which can only be a good self-development activity. Great to see young people focus on supporting others, much like Rotary! David is a Ukrainian host in Crossford, where Kateryna and her family were moved to in January after spending some time on the cruise ship based at Leith. She had visited Scotland 20 years ago, so not all new to her. Leaving Odesa involved herself and her daughters putting as much as possible into a car and driving 3000km / 2000m to Scotland. In Ukraine Kateryna was a qualified Lawyer, holding also a PHD. She worked for many large companies as their company lawyer. While in Scotland her focus has been on English language skills where she has a goal to be as fluent as possible. Her children have settled in Crossford and recently won a Scottish Poem event at Crossford PS, with Next Stop Kirkcaldy. Now Kateryna is in Crossford, she no longer feels like a refugee and regards Crossford more like home and is starting to work through the challenges of finding a job. She is also looking at ways to volunteer and “give back” for the help and support received from the Scottish government and the people of Scotland.
