Lest We Forget

WW1 Poetry

Our meeting this week was a meeting with a difference. Carnforth Rotarian, Ken McGrath had organised a number of members, including himself, to read poems from the First World War. The poets chosen, were Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, Jessie Pope, E.A. Mackintosh, Wilfrid Gibson, Robert Service, Madeline Ida Bradford and Robert Graves. Jessie Pope wrote the War Girls, which was brought to life by Kath and Gillian. GIllian made a great job of MunitionsWages by Madeline Ida Bradford. The poems were a poignant reminder of the dreadful conditions endured by soldiers, and of the number of youngsters, who lied about their age to join up, not knowing what they were about to face. PTSD was unknown and many soldiers paid the ultimate price for what was then called cowardice.

A huge thanks to Ken for masterminding the evening, and to Kath, Gillian, Heather, Malcolm, Brian and David for reading  poems with empathy.
