WHAT DID OUR CLUB MEMBERS DO ON

                         24TH OCTOBER 2023

Sometime before 24th October, World Polio Day, President Stuart proposed that the club should undertake a sponsored walk to support this very worthwhile charity. Three times round Sandbach park was equivalent to one mile, he had calculated.

Come the day, ten intrepid walkers braved the weather, complete with anoraks, boots and brollies – although the latter weren’t needed as the rain kindly ceased before the start.

After consulting various algorithms, Stuart suggested two laps anti clockwise followed by one lap clockwise. This was nothing to do with the rotation of the earth but rather, as our sagacious President explained “it’s a better finish that way round.”

Not all Rotarians, for various reasons, were able to do the walk but everyone gave generously in sponsorship or donations. One member was, that day, conducting a history walk around Sandbach with a group from Holmes Chapel. Being about one mile in length he suggested they should sponsor him – which they did.

Following the first lap of the park, the group were accosted by a young lady asking what they were doing.  After hearing about Rotary and End Polio Now, she dug into her handbag and donated a note to the cause.  She had a friend in her earlier life who suffered from polio so was aware how devastating it can be.

After their arduous walk they adjourned to The Place (next to St Luke's charity shop) for a well-earned tea or coffee.

The final total raised – including a last-minute donation of £6 – was £500. President Stuart declared it “a satisfactory morning's exercise in all respects” and expressed his thanks to all club members.
