                                                                    January 2024 Bulletin

Last year went by so quickly I didn’t have time to diet!

Carol Concert Gill Rouse

A sincere thank you to everyone who helped on the night with special thanks to John Phillip who staged managed the event on the day. All our performers said what a huge help he was to them all. In the end we sold just under 500 tickets - Leckhampton School purchasing 240 of these. The bucket collection and sale of programmes raised £300 but I don’t have the final concert figures as yet. Both Alex Chalk and Mark Cummings were very complimentary that nearly all the concert performers were young people – the only adults we the handbell ringers. The programme was lively and varied and everyone enjoyed the Gloucestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra especially in the second half.

Snowdrop Teas at Colesbourne Vivien Barr

At our next meeting on Monday Jan. 15th I will circulate a list for the Snowdrops Weekend, Sat 3rd and Sun. 4th February at Colesbourne Park.

I would like to ask you to sign for your preferred time for helping with the event please.

The days will be divided into 2 rotas – starting from 12 noon – 2.30 pm, and then 2.30 pm – 4.30 .

The 12 noon will be for setting up the various activities and serving the first batch of customers.

I will be able to give you all more details once we get these from Colesbourne Park.

Thank you all very much indeed for volunteering AND making cakes for us, and let’s hope the weather will be reasonable and we have a good turn-out of customers.

It is a very worthwhile event to hold, and we hope to make a good amount of money for our funds, and thank you for your support.

Pendyrus Choir John Phillip

In response to popular demand we are delighted to have secured the services of Pendyrus Male Choir for a concert on Saturday, 18th of May. It has been heartening to receive encouragement from many people to arrange the return of this outstanding ensemble. The hall at Leckhampton High School has been retained. Please mark your diaries for an event that we are certain you will enjoy.

Cheltenham Wine Festival - 13 April 2024 Steve Wood

In case you have not heard, the 2024 Cheltenham Wine Festival will take place on Saturday 13th April at Cheltenham Ladies’ College Fitness Centre Function Room, Malvern Road, Cheltenham. Most of the arrangements will follow the format of previous years.

Tickets are available now at £25 each and can be purchased through Ticket Tailor. The link is on the club website, or you can click on https://buytickets.at/rccn/1088136. When asked if you have a promo code, if you click on that wording and then type in ROTARY24 in the box shown, you will get a £5 discount on each ticket. This can be used for tickets for friends and family as well as any tickets you buy for yourself.

Buy now to avoid disappointment!

Event update January to Spring 2024 Richard Purdon

As I prepare for our trip to hopefully sunnier climates, I can update the membership on the activities outside of the club.

1) 100 Years of running the GOLD CUP.

The Jockey Club are looking for more applications for their Grant Fund. I attended a review meeting in the middle of December to hear about the forms received so far. They had received 8, and took the decision to award 3 grants before the closing date!? I was proud to see that 5 of the 8 submitted had some Rotary connection. 2 received the top sum of £2000 , and the third £1000. I am aware of 2 others coming from RCCN contacts – so if you can please encourage more to enter.

Just as a reminder, all applicants need to be in by end of February 2024.

2) Love our Turf at the Festival 12th March to 15th March 2024.

I have more volunteers at this time than I did at this time last year!! It is a long day and not for the faint-hearted. But if you have younger relatives who would enjoy some free entry to the days’ racing, pleased encourage them to sign up for any of the 3 days – Wednesday to Friday. I am very pleased to say Winchcombe Club have said 8 will come on the Tuesday. Remember apart from the benefits on the day, the Trust fund will receive £100 per person for the volunteers supplied from their club. As a Club we earned £800 last year.

I covered 25 out of the 40 places last year. So the more the merrier. And, of course, a Big thank you to those who have put their names down already.

3) Conquering Everest at the Cheltenham Boys College on Friday 8th March at 7p.m.

Some members may be interested to consider this very different talk. Tom Clowes and his brother became the first pair of British Siblings to reach the summit of Everest. The event is being held in The College’s Old Classical Theatre. As per our events recently, there will be refreshments and a raffle, all in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Tickets are priced at £20, and can be acquired from the Eventbrite site of direct from Richard. If people would like to help on the night, with the support activities this would be very well received.
