Salvation Army

The speaker at our meeting on Thursday 18th April was our own member Malcolm Watkins. Malcolm and his wife Margaret are now retired from the Salvation Army, having held the rank of major. The Salvation Army is a world-wide evangelical christian church. Started by William Booth in 1865 as the Christian Mission in the east end of London, it is organised and governed by the Salvation Army Act 1931. The work of the Salvation Army is to Advance christian religion; Advance education; Relief of poverty; Charitable acts beneficial to society; Provision of schools in Arica and the Far East. Income is from legacies and donations with fund raising through shops, homes, insurance and banking services. The  Salvation Army operate a  family member tracing service providing comfort to many families  when information linking a lost relative is found. Malcolm gave up his job with British Telecom and he and Margaret undertook 2 years training passing out as ordained Salvation Army ministers. They served in many places in the UK then went to work in Germany serving the armed forces and in the Falklands.
