WESTER HAILES HIGH SCHOOL AND BALERNO’S YOUTH VISION

A VALUABLE PARTNERSHIP

That’s how Claire Dancer sees it.

Claire is Depute Head at Wester Hailes High School and she came to Currie Balerno Rotary to tell us of the school’s success in developing the confidence and the achievements of young people from an area which has its difficulties.

Nearly 85% of the school’s pupils are from households classed in the lowest two categories but despite this the parents, without exception, have aspirations for their children and support the school in seeking the most successful outcomes at school and beyond.

Wester Hailes High School does everything it can to encourage participation in all its activities and these activities go beyond academic teaching; and it is here that Youth Vision, led by Sara Beauregard who is well known to Currie Balerno Rotary, plays an important part in leading projects that include developmental activities outside the school. Pictured are two examples of those projects.

Claire told of the lasting effect of school closures due to COVID, which set back the development of so many children but especially those from less advantaged backgrounds. The school, along with Youth Vision, is succeeding in involving the children at Wester Hailes High School in the wider community and in the natural environment around them.
