Beirut Disaster

A brilliant response from clubs in D1010

District 1010 - an update directly from Beirut!

From Ron Farra, President Elect of the Rotary Club of Beirut Cedars

Thank you for your extraordinary help. You truthfully exemplify ‘Lend a Hand’ to people in need. Right now, our club has joined forces with two reputable NGOs:

•  and • in order to renovate 10 of the 60,000 houses destroyed by the blast. This includes four phases:

  •  securing windows and doors,
  •  fixing walls and ceilings
  •  repairing furniture
  •  providing fridge and oven if needed.

We have put USD 25,000 towards this.

Our second mission is to help restore maybe four of the 150 schools destroyed. The €15 million French fund applies to the six schools which teach the French curriculum and are associated with the French Cultural Centre. So many schools are left to find their own solution when parents haven’t paid the tuition for the last two semesters because they had no money (banks went bankrupt on October 17th, 2019) and the Corona virus has kept children at home since February!

If you agree (i.e. if we, District 1010, agree) we can match your USD 15,000 [GBP 11,250] donation from our own funds and use this USD 30,000 for education*.

In addition, through 28 Rotary Clubs spread across Lebanon, we are distributing 10,000 food boxes, at a cost of USD 20,000 every fifteen days. This is made possible by donations from the USA where Rotary is receiving donations from Lebanese expatriates.   This charity gets tax relief on donations as it is what is known as a 501-c-3 foundation.

Thank you for keeping Lebanon on your mind, prayers and actions. Greetings to your members. Stay safe.

Clubs/Rotarians may donate to the District 1010 International Account, preferably by BACS transfer.

Please email Ewen Hatchwell, District Treasurer your Club name, how much you are donating and if the donation is by BACS or Cheque.

Payment arrangements:

BACS transfers:  Account No 10053180, Sort Code 83-23-10, adding the reference:  [club].Beirut (enter a shortened club name in place of ‘[club]’).

Please make cheques out to Rotary District 1010 and send together with a statement that the payment is to the Beirut Disaster Fund and your Club name to: Ewen Hatchwell (address in handbook)

So far over $30,000 has been donated by clubs and members in District 1010, and money is still coming in!
