Captain Mike, Founder President of Stokesley Rotary

The Rotary Club of Stokesley is fund raising for local charities by looking for sponsorship for Captain Mike Irving FNI (the Club’s founder President 40 years ago), Stokesley Rotarians, Associates and Friends to clock up a total of 10,000 miles walking by Christmas, the equivalent to walking round mainland Britain.     This project was started on 13th September, the date of the ‘Not the Great North’ Run, and was inspired by our successful ‘Walk for Water’ in September 2019.

Mike has spent all of his professional life at sea.   His early years were as a navigating officer in British cargo passenger ships, trading in the Far East.   Time in tankers, short sea trades and coastal colliers further broadened his experience.   He spent 36 years as a River Tees pilot handling ships up to 200,000 tons.    In addition to being on one of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s technical advisory committees, Captain Mike has represented pilots at National, European and International level, and is a Fellow of the Nautical Institute.

The Rotary Club of Stokesley supports a number of local charities physically and by raising funds to distribute.   Their main fund raising activities which include the Annual Classic Cars Show and Car Boot sale, could  not take place this year due to the Covid 19 outbreak.
