£6,000 PRESENTED TO WORTHY CAUSES
A LOCAL rotary club and radio station have teamed up to raise £6,000 for good causes in the Burnley area.
Proceeds from the annual Rotary Club of Burnley Pendleside and 2BR radio auction were handed over to representatives of Cavan's Fund, the NSPCC and Samaritans at a special presentation evening.
The parents of one-year-old Cavan Kirkham-MacCallum, Bernadette and Jim, were presented with a cheque for £3,000 towards the cost of vital surgery and treatments.
Little Cavan was born with hemimelia, a rare congenital limb deficiency that affects all his limbs.
He lacks crucial bones, ligaments and muscles in both his arms and legs. He will undergo many years of reconstructive surgery, some never performed before, with uncertain outcomes – alongside certain amputation.
Cavan will need specialist care at various centres throughout the UK with a special eye kept on him from the surgeons in Germany and the USA.
There is not a registered charity for hemimelia, as cases are so rare.
Cavan will likely require prosthetic limbs, expensive equipment and adapted
housing that are not available from the NHS or local government. He is too young for his parents to be able to claim financial help with mobility needs.
The local branch of the Samaritans was presented with a cheque for £1,000 towards annual running costs which run into tens of thousands of pounds locally every year.
And a cheque for £1,000 was also handed over by club president Mr Chris Daggett to NSPCC regional fund-raiser Jeanette Drew. £1,000 is also to be presented to Pendleside Hospice which celebrates its 20th anniversary this week.
Mr Daggett said: "Both the club and 2BR are delighted and proud to be able to help these extremely worthy causes.
“There are so many people out there giving their time and commitment to support others.
The only shame of it all is that these people and organisations have to rely so heavily on donations such as these just to keep going.
"I would like to thank our friends at 2BR, particularly Ricky Kirby, who have worked so hard with us to make the event such a successful one every year.
"Evenings such as this are very humbling and make all the fund-raising efforts so worthwhile."
Anybody wanting to donate an auction lot for the 2009 event should

EVENING OF GORE GREETS GUESTS
