Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Staines

Rotary in Staines

Rotary was founded in 1905 in Chicago by Paul Harris and three professional associates, all of them successful in their chosen careers, but all seeking friends and fellowship in that large and often intimidating city.

The founders' aim was to create a club that was fun to belong to, a club with no petty restrictions and where a member could at once be on amiable first name terms with fellow members.

And did they suceed!  The Chicago club grew quickly and began to support a variety of good causes.  They named it Rotary because its early meeting venues rotated between the offices of its first members. Other towns and cities around the world saw the value of Rotary and began to form their own clubs.

The first meeting of the Staines club was a lunch in 1931 at the Angel Hotel, now the Baroosh wine bar, but for most of its life it has met at its present venue of the Mercure, Thames Lodge Hotel.

The club has a strong international flavour being twinned with the Rotary Clubs of Melun Vicomté near Paris and of Overijse-Zoniën, near Brussels.  Meetings between the clubs take place at least every couple of years and allow members to give their collective support to international good works.

Here in Staines we always like to hear from business and professional people interested in Rotary membership.  If that's you, do get in touch using the 'Contact Form' at the top of this page.
