Welcome to the website of the Rotary Club of Wootton Bassett & District
Welcome to our club's home page...
We are a friendly group of people from diverse family backgrounds and various different careers. However we have plenty in common, including:
- a desire to have fun,
- a mutual wish to help others, locally, nationally and internationally,
- a sense of integrity.
We meet weekly every Wednesday lunchtime at The Wiltshire Golf and Country Club. In addition we have evening social events, daytime trips and plenty of opportunities to get out and about in our local community, helping to make a difference. If this sounds interesting, then come and join us. Regardless of gender, race, religion or political persuasion you will be very welcome!

Recent Events:
Wednesday 25th January: Lunchtime Meeting
The club welcomed Peter Jones and James Woolford who described the history of the Swindon Hydrotherapy Pool which opened in July 1979 and the benefits it continues to provide today.
Wednesday 18th January: Lunchtime Meeting
Our guest speaker was our District Governor, Martin Greaves. In his preamble, he announced that Rotary International had met its goal to raise $200 million to help bring about the eradication of polio and that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation were adding a bonus of $50 million for reaching the target ahead of schedule.
Martin then described the sponsored cycle ride he and his wife made from Beijing to the Great Wall of China. After the cycling and raising money for Mencap, they cruised the Yangtze River. Martin’s talk and his pictures really emphasised the vastness of the enterprise carried out by the Chinese government in building the Three Gorges Dam across the Yangtze.
In thanking Martin for his talk, Richard wished him well for the remainder of his year as President and assured him that the Rotary Club of Royal Wootton Bassett and District were looking to be actively involved in the Festival of Rotary on the Sunday of the District Conference in April.
Wednesday 11th January: Lunchtime Meeting
Natalie Port from the Jennifer Trust (http://www.jtsma.org.uk) gave us an explanation of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) which is an incurable recessive disease.
For a baby to be affected, both parents must be carriers of the faulty gene. It affects about 1 in 6,500 of babies born and so is a relatively rare disease. Nevertheless, that means about 100 new cases are diagnosed each year.
To help the families affected by SMA, the Jennifer Trust provides a professional team of outreach workers and maintains a nationwide peer support network. The charity also supports research projects.
Saturday 7th January: New Year Party
David hosted the Club’s New Year party. The roaring fires and wooden beams certainly helped to set the scene.
There was plenty of delicious food including some fantastic salads, David’s baked potatoes and sweets to die for, including Chris’s fruit pudding with secret ingredients.
Terry organised games and quizzes to make sure our grey-matter was exercised, Gill won all the competitions and a good time was had by all.
