Visit to Newby Hall

Members and their partners had a memorable visit to Newby Hall and its gardens on 7th July.

We were treated to a most interesting guided tour of the house, most of which was built in the 1690's. Not surprisingly the house has undergone changes of ownership and many alterations since that time. Sir Christopher Wren, Robert Adam and John Carr are only three of the famous architects who have had involvement with the house. Successive owners through the ages added to both the fabric and the interior decoration of the house, which contains much fine furniture, some by Chippendale, Graeco-Roman antique sculpture, fine china and many objects and pieces of furniture from abroad. Robert Adam designed the Tapestry Room with its unique French tapestries, and the stunning sculpture gallery.

The house is still lived in by the Compton family and it has a very homely feel to it. The grandfather of the present owner spent some 50 years of the last century designing and developing the 25 acres of gardens, which are a sight to behold.

After the guided tour of the house, most of us lunched on the restaurant terrace, before taking in the delights of the garden.

Many thanks to George Armitage and the Foundation Committee for organising such a splendid day out.
