On the Island of Ukerewe,  Mwanza, Tanzania,  on Lake Victoria.

Rotary Clubs have mounted several projects in the Island of  Ukerewe which is a very deprived area reached by a 25 nautical miles journey by ferry from Mwanza.  The projects are aimed to improve the health care of the 350,000 population,  and improve child mortality.  Rotary members who have visited the island recently in working with these projects have noted that local people are very short of tools of all kinds - joinery(woodwork) plumbing, building, and gardening tools would be appreciated. There is electricity on the island so electrical tools can be used but they cannot always rely on  the  power supply - As long as tools are clean and in good working order they can go.  A container is to be despatched from Yorkshire to Ukerewe in March 2012 carrying other goods,  and space can be found for tools.

Stop Press:  John Phillip, leader of the Rotary projects to help people on the island of Ukerewe tells us that they also need "Anything for kids – clean clothes, plastic chairs, tables etc would be welcome. Domestic science items (sewing machines etc) will be very useful. We could do with some panels and frames to kit out a fruit juice bar? Also fruit juice makers."

The Rotary Club of Wensleydale is mounting an appeal for unused tools,  to be received by the end of January 2012 please.  Tools supplied would enable local people to support themselves, improve the growing of crops etc.

We are happy to accept items needing small repairs,  any queries please ring David Milner on 01969 623781

We aim to set up a point where tools maybe left in the near future, but in the meantime if you have tools to donate please contact any Club member known to you or ring David M. on 01969 623781 Mike on 01969 623707, John on 0779 6273885 or Neal on 01969 650169 or use the email form below.  Collection can be arranged if desired.
