Welcome to the May 2012 Service News, linking you to news, resources and information from all of RIBI's Service Committees and Resource Groups. It is emailed, monthly, to all 30,000+ members whose email address is on the RIBI database. If Club Secretaries are aware of members with an email address, but not on the RI database, please forward to them (and, ideally, add their details to the database.)

Service News editions are archived on the RIBI website, in the Updates area, and members are no longer required to login to gain access.

If you cannot read this email properly (due to your email settings), click on this link and a web page showing the email as intended will open.

Membership Development & Retention

One of the first Satellite meetings in RIBI goes live: An excellent success story about a club that has used new freedoms to increase membership and diversity can be found here. Many clubs could benefit from this approach.

Raising the profile... in order to attract new members: As we invest in raising the profile of Rotary, we need to ensure that the funds are spent wisely. No amount of profile will have any positive effect if the product isn't ready. Is YOUR club ready? Will potential Rotarians want to join? Are some changes needed to make the club meetings better use of time, more enjoyable? These challenges are being faced in other parts of Rotary too. Click through to read more.

A Corporate first?: The Rotary Club of Epsom has inducted (24/5/12) its first Corporate Member - Epsom Coaches Group. Is this a firts in RIBI? And have you got Corporate Members ready to join? Please let Peter Davey, committee chairman, know.

Membership webinars x 2: Two membership webinars have been planned, for 2.00pm on 19th June 2012 and at 5.30pm on 26th June 2012. Whilst the main presentation content - how best to take advantage of the forthcoming Public Image/ Awareness Campaign to attract new members - will be the same for both webinars, each webinar will end with a live Q&A session. Please note the dates for now, but details of how to register will be in the Members' Newsletter on 8th June.

Marketing, PR & Communications

Polio eradication "Emergency plan" launched: Despite an historically low figure of just 55 cases by mid May, Polio has been declared a "global emergency" by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative after "explosive" outbreaks in countries previously free of the disease. Read more on the RIBI website, with quotes from RI President Kalyan Banerjee on the BBC website.

Polio and the Vatican: President Burman was interviewed on Vatican Radio (click to hear the interview) yesterday regarding the emergency action plan launched by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Rotary was also mentioned briefly on BBC Radio 4's PM programme.

Updates on RIBI website: this Updates section on the RIBI website is well worth keeping an eye on. Not only does it keep you updated on news and events specifically for members, it also lets you know about changes and additions to all areas of the RIBI website: such as when new or amended documents have been added to the website, or that there are answers to frequently asked questions, or even that the phone lines to the Secretariat are down.

We're for Communities: latest news on this exciting initiative, which helps us all explain and 'sell' Rotary to the public in a simpler, more compelling way, along with a new video, leaflets, badges etc materials available via the RIBI Shop. See the Membership committee news above for details of two webinars in June.

RIBI Presidential Handover: Celebrate the Handover with John and Sheila Minhinick in beautiful Perthshire - Sunday 1st July. Click for details.
