BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION
Warren Appleby spoke at our meeting of 9 September on the role and wide-ranging activities of the British Heart Foundation, an organisation formed in 1961. Since then, methods of treating heart disease have developed greatly with the introduction of pacemakers, by-pass operations, statins, congenital heart disease surgery and other treatments that extend life, many of which receive financial support from the BHF. Donations are made to about 1000 heart research projects, to anti-smoking advertising campaigns and for the education of children in emergency life-saving skills. A heart help-line and local community initiatives are also supported, with Burton upon Trent receiving funding because of its status as a heart town. Over 900 defibrillators have been purchased through the Football Association. BHF
