THE LIFE AND DEATH OF GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER

We were privileged to have Graham Stowe speak to us at our meeting of 16 September. Graham had a distinguished career in business, culminating in his appointment as Chief Executive of the Brittania Building Society. He has also been Chairman of the Board of Governors of Staffordshire University and High Sherriff of Staffordshire in 2007-8. In retirement, Graham has been able to indulge his passion for military history and has made a particular study of George Armstrong Custer, the remarkable American general who was an officer during the Civil War and Indian Wars. Graham outlined the early life and career of Custer and then went on to give a detailed insight into the participants, lead-up and fighting in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 in which Custer lost his life at the age of 36.
