Duty Rtn: M Haroon. Raffle by: G Beacock. Tech duty: C Lloyd.

Richard Shakespeare gave us a riveting and impressive talk on living with cerebral palsy at our meeting of 18 November. Richard, the President of Etwall and Hilton Rotary Club, was born prematurely 30 years ago, causing him to be disabled. After obtaining a degree in Business Management and Marketing, he first worked in the complaints department of a bank, this job occasionally proving unsuited to his direct and frank approach to dealing with customers. Having been made redundant with a generous payoff, he then spent some time visiting the Job Centre and applying unsuccessfully for numerous jobs. Richard described this period of unemployment with the pithy humour that was a feature of his talk. A complete career change followed when he decided to become an independent consultant providing disability training and awareness sessions for a variety of organisations. He has also successfully represented numerous clients at tribunals, with a 100% success rate, has been consulted on disability issues by David Cameron and Vince Cable, has been presented with an award by Theo Paphitis of Dragons
