The Rotary Club of Llantwit Major and the Stroke Association have been working in partnership for a number of years to help combat high blood pressure, the single biggest factor for stroke. On Saturday 18th April a very successful event was held in the shopping precinct in Llantwit Major where around 100 people had their blood pressure tested.
Club president Mary Noyes, said "We are very happy to have been able to offer this service to the community. If we find only one person whose blood pressure is too high then we may have helped to save a life."
Each year an estimated 150,000 people across the UK will have a stroke. It is one of the top three causes of death and the single largest cause of adult disability. There are often no symptoms of high blood pressure, so that these measurements are vitally important.
The Stroke Association has been publicising the acronym - FAST - to tell people how to recognise a stroke.
Facial weakness. Can the person smile? Has the mouth or eye drooped?
Arm weakness. Can the person raise both arms?
Speech problems. Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
Time to call 999. Stroke is a medical emergency.
