Speaker - Blood Runners - at the Rose and Crown

Thu, Sep 24th 2015 at 12:00 am -

We had a pretty good attendance on Thursday for our final visit of this summer to Rose & Crown. In addition to our guest speakers, we were joined by Stan Keller.

Dr John was primed to say grace but timing got the better of me so we missed it!

During parish announcements, David gave details of the trip to Buck Pal (taking place 26th) and that to BBC on 14 Nov. Bill reminded all about the race/casino night on 24 Oct. We briefly discussed getting a team together for Rivermead quiz on 10 Oct but I have subsequently confirmed that it has been cancelled due to low support. Pearl reported on the Chelmsford clubs Golf day that had taken place earlier in the week and the good time that had been had by all. Leila reported on her efforts at the BIllericay Mayflower Bell boat races.

David asked whether the club wished to support the annual mulled wine event; he will take a lead but needs commitment from members both in terms of input on the day and backing of the financial risk (which is of course shared with other Chelmsford clubs): members confirmed that they wished to support this event.

After the usual comfort break, we welcomed Ron Farrow and Keith Weller from Blood Runners.

Essex Bloodrunners are a charitable organization that delivers blood, samples and emergency plasma to hospital departments across Essex. They do this free of charge whenever and wherever it’s urgently needed. They are on call from 7:00pm to 7:00am, 7 nights a week, 24 hours Weekends and Bank Holidays. All are volunteer bikers and do not receive any payment for the work they do.

They told us about the background to their voluntary work and what they as volunteers get from it. It was an interesting and lively session with numerous questions dealt with. I handed over a cheque from the club as a contribution to their funds. John Bacchus gave the vote of thanks on behalf of us all.

Dr John extracted fines and Leila won the raffle.

Next week we are finally back at college for a talk on a visit to Cambodia.

Remember that apologies are now going to Jane - by Monday latest; also please note that college has informed us that all no shows will now be charged for meals so if you apologise late, expect a bill!
