The club had a talk from Linda Feagan about the Dogs Trust. Until eight years ago this organisation was known as the Canine Defence League. Their member Clarissa Baldwin gave this name and then what was to become the well-known slogan ‘A dog is for life and not just Christmas’. Linda is based at the Trusts’ Bridgend unit where hundreds of dogs are cared for every year. Bridgend is one of twenty centres in the UK; they also have one in Dublin, and last year cared for 17,000 dogs. Some dogs are strays but many come into the Trusts care because their owners may have died, become unwell or have gone into a home. No healthy dog is put down. Last year Bridgend rehoused nearly five hundred dogs: each dog is micro-chipped, assessed by the qualified staff who then try to find the most suitable new owners for each particular animal. Re-housed dogs also come with a month’s free animal insurance and the pledge that the Trust will always take the animal back if the new owners are unable to cope. Following the talk President Elect Charles Anderson invited questions of which there were many. The evening finished with the speaker being thanked by Rotarian Rae Morgan on behalf of the club for such an informative and interesting talk.
