Speaker Meeting

Mon, Apr 18th 2016 at 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Mr John Miles from Guilford Eye project

Charles Anderson President Elect, Rtn. John Miles and Rotary Club President Dr David Rogers

The guest speaker was Roatarian John Miles who spoke about the Guildford Rotary Eye Project.  The charity was founded in 1998 with the aim of providing a million free cataract operations to people in India and Africa suffering from avoidable blindness.  It is estimated that about fifty million people suffer from this condition in these areas which prevents them from working and being able to support themselves. In large areas of the sub-continent of India and in much of  Africa there are few if any eye specialists or eye hospitals.  The aim of the Eye Project, now known as Global Sight Solutions, is to create local eye hospitals and to train eye specialists.  It also provides hospital transport and eye screening camps together with dietary information which is having had a huge impact in many areas.  It is estimated that for just £5 a person can have sight restored.  Unfortunately, many places in the areas mentioned are too poor to afford the cost of treatment but with the help of Rotary International, and others, self-sustaining hospitals and treatment centres are now being established.
