Talk by Pam Swabey from Chelmsford Civic Society - at the College

Thu, Jan 7th 2016 at 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Tonight's talk will be from the lady who is fronting the campaign to retain Marconi's Hall Street factory and who is also a Chelmsford City Guide.

Hi all and for anyone I didn't speak to last week, Happy new year. We had a good attendance back at the college for the first meeting of 2016 and although I suspect the main course was not entirely to the liking of some, I like my curries and was well satisfied.

Janet opened the meeting with grace and towards the end of the evening levied her first set of fines.

In parish announcements, I reminded all about the Rotary shop that we need to staff on Tuesday 23 Feb. Bill and Marilyn have so far volunteered to join me and we could do with a few more so if you can spare a couple of hours that day, please let me know. I also tried again to get some support for Rivermead Joint Breakfast next Wednesday including a tour of new facilities at APU; if anyone still wants to join in I suspect that can be arranged. Kathryn reminded us of an event for world Rotary day on 23 Feb, which involves walking across the Millennium Dome; so you have a choice between walking the Dome or staffing the CVS shop in Chelmsford.

Kathryn asked whether there were any takers for a Valentines dinner/dance at the Holiday Inn, Basildon; please let her know.

Dr John and Malcolm announced their intent to walk the length of the Thames in September and invited club members to join them - either for the whole walk or for odd days. I'm sure either of them will be pleased to talk to you more about it. Well done to both of them and hopefully we can conjure up some company for them along the way.

Bill circulated 'sign up' sheets for the jumble sale on 13 Feb and quiz on Feb 27th. Please get your names down and lets make these successful events.

After the break, I was pleased to welcome our guests Ros and Chris from Chelmsford Civic Society. They gave a really interesting talk about the current efforts to secure a 'memorial' for Marconi's efforts in Chelmsford and thus to enhance the cultural aspect of our city. There were plenty of questions and it was one of those evenings when I was sorry to cut it short.

Claire gave vote of thanks and Mike won the raffle.

Next week we are at college for our Business Meeting. You hopefully will recall that late last year we agreed to have an evening discussion about the club's stance and direction on fundraising; That will be the main item for our business meeting this month. I hope that most members will be able to attend the meeting on 14th Jan but if you are not going to be there, I would appreciate any views that you have and I will try to represent those at the meeting.
