Talk by Silverline at the College

Thu, Mar 10th 2016 at 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Silverline is a charity founded by Esther Rantzen to try and tackle the loneliness experienced by older people

Thursday had us back at the college for an entertaining evening. We had a good attendance, including being able to welcome back Pearl and Bryan.

Donald said grace (at least, he said something but not in English). and later extracted a few fines.

In parish announcements we discovered that Malcolm has completed the plinth for the rosebowl and that we should have it available at club next week.[since the meeting, Malcolm has delivered the plinth and, I must say, it is excellent - 10/10]. I also reported that Rotoract have a quiz scheduled for Wed 23 March and it will be good if we can support that. Richard updated all on 3 weekend events and passed round the sign-up sheets again. If you haven't yet signed and want to join any of these please let Richard know asap. Malcolm updated us on the plans for the Thames walk and repeated calls for some support during the trek. please contact Malcolm or Dr John if you want to get involved. Anyone wanting to join in for a day can I assume join whenever, but those wanting to do more than 1 day need to sign up soon in order to get accommodation booked. Claire reminded us all about the Hall St exhibitions and said they need volunteers for a couple of hours on Sundays in April; please contact Claire if you can help. Roger reported on a sad failure by the darts team - more training required for next year.

After the comfort break, we had an excellent talk by Patrick Geoghegan, Trustee from Sliverline, the charity set up to combat loneliness amongst the elderly. Demand for the charity services seems to be growing enormously and whilst it is perhaps sad that it is needed, it is good to know that something is there. Patrick explained how people can help with a relatively small input of their own time each week - and without leaving home. I will certainly be exploring this more; if anyone wants to know more about the service or how they can help, let me know and I will ensure we get details from Patrick.
