The Rotary organisation encourages young people by providing competitions and opportunities that would otherwise not be available. to them. One such competition is Rotary Young Chef which is open to students in full-time education between the ages of eleven and seventeen. This year competitors were asked to provide a special three course meal for two for under fifteen pounds. During a recent visit to the Rotary Club meeting at the West House Hotel the sponsor of the competition, Mr Ian Hunt managing Director of Filco Supermarkets, presented club President Dr David Rogers with a cheque for £500. Mr Hunt, a strong supporter of the competition for many years, said that it was important for young people to gain knowledge of basic cookery skills and to be aware of methods of creating healthy meals. Skills successfully learned at this age would offer a life-long benefit to those taking part. On behalf of Filco Foods he was delighted to support the event again this year. David Rogers thanked Ian Hunt for the generous support which enabled Llantwit Major Rotary to continue offering this important event. Other initiatives to encourage young people include Young Musician, Young Inventor, Youth Speaks and the Camp Ryla (Rotary Youth Leadership Award).
