President John Ardley presented the Young Carer and Citizen of the Year awards at the recent lunch.
The Rotary Club of St Andrews Young Carer Awards were presented to six worthy recipients. Rotary arranged for each of them to have a special day of their choice together with a little spending money. Their choices were Horse Riding Lessons supplied by Drumcarrow Livery St Andrews, a Pampering Day supplied by Spoiled Hairdressing St Andrews and Land Yachting by Blown Away Experiences West Sands St Andrews.
Young Carers provide vital but often unseen and unrecognised roles in supporting family members and in some instances these responsibilities take a heavy emotional toll. Some carers can be as young as 8 years old. These young carers have to grow up quickly spending time doing tasks and limiting their time for normal childhood friends and school work.
The Citizen of the Year Award was presented to Jenny Sibbald who has been heavily involved for many years in St Andrews in Bloom. She has played a leading role in ensuring that the town presents a welcoming colourful face to visitors, students and the residents of St Andrews. Her many duties include leading the group, sourcing funding, planning the displays and sourcing and ordering the plants. In addition she organises rotas for planting out and watering which involves liaising with numerous organisations in the town. She is a trained judge for Beautiful Fife, Beautiful Scotland and the ‘Its Your neighbourhood’ Awards. She has also taken part in outreach talks to several local organisations and recently has been involved in the Men’s Shed Project and Tourism in St Andrews.
