Young Citizen’s Awards 2018

The Rotary Club of Brighton held its Annual Young Citizen’s Awards Ceremony on 28th June 2018 at the Brighton Hilton Metropole Hotel.

The Rotary Club of Brighton held its Annual Young Citizen’s Awards Ceremony last evening (28th June 2018) at the Brighton Hilton Metropole Hotel. Five schools from Brighton and Hove nominated students who had carried out work and projects in the community and who had put exceptional effort into their projects. Projects ranged from teaching rugby to refugee children or working with a therapy dog to getting supermarkets to donate sanitary products to local foodbanks. The schools which took part were: Portslade Aldridge Community Academy, Patcham High School, Cardinal Newman Catholic School, Varndean School and Longhill High School. The Awards were presented by Mr Peter Field, the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex. More than 120 Gold and Silver awards were presented on the night and a further 141 Bronze awards will be presented at the schools.

Students from the schools gave presentations on their projects and on their own reactions to being able to see the results plus their satisfaction at being able to make a difference in the short term and their hopes of making larger differences to community needs in the future. Teachers from the schools made speeches too. They spoke of their pride in their students and said how the recognition by the Rotary Club of Brighton of both students and their schools enhanced the educational experiences that they were able to give. Two schools have expressed a wish to start “Interact” Clubs and two of the schools would like to join the Club as corporate members.

When organising the event the club expected about 270 people to attend including the students but, despite the fact that England were playing Belgium, the hall was set out by the hotel for 400+ and we estimate that in excess of 350 attended the presentation. The evening was enjoyed by all and many of the parents expressed their pleasure and gratitude that Rotary recognises the effort and hard work that their children put in to their community and told us that the recognition of the work gives great encouragement.
