Representatives of the Llantwit Major Interact Club were guests at dinner with the club meeting at the West House Hotel. The Interact Club was established some years ago in the local Comprehensive School and is available to senior students prior to them going on the university
or employment. The club, one of the largest in the United Kingdom, meets weekly in the school and raises money for local and national good causes.
Rotary President Gareth Rees welcomed the group led by their President Victoria White. Victoria said that this year the Interact club had raised £833 for their charities and had had fun doing it.
The group of club officers and members would be leaving after taking A levels later this year but that a new committee of students had been elected to carry on with the work they do in the community.
Gareth said that at a time when young people often attract bad or negative publicity the whole community of Llantwit Major should be proud of its excellent local school and of the positive example that has been set by members of Interact. He hoped that they would continue their association with the Rotary organisation by joining Rotaract clubs at university and eventually by becoming members of Rotary itself. Other Interact members attending were Catrin Llewellyn Vice President, Alexandra Ford Secretary, Erin Dalton Treasurer and members Jack Wilkinson, Ewan Terrett, Courtney Little, Dominic Henson and Sophie Moore.
Later Rotarian Gareth Cheesman and his wife Jan gave a fascinating account of their recent Great Silk Road Adventure. After flying to Beijing they had joined a small group of fellow travellers who over the next forty-seven days travelled by road and rail across Asia before reaching Istanbul form where they later flew home. With a selection of vivid photographs Gareth and Jan described their extraordinary experiences of being closely watched by sometime suspicious police and invariably friendly locals many of whom were eager to practise their English. Shortly after arriving back Gareth and Jan flew out to the Philippines on behalf of Rotary District 1150 to present new fishing boats to a community that had been devastated by a tsunami. They were warmly thanked for their most interesting talk.
