District Governor's Newsletter - September 2018

Setember is Basic Education and Literacy Month

DG Dave writes

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month, so I would particularly like to commend all those Clubs who support Education & Literacy projects either at home or abroad. Whether it be working with Schoolreaders UK helping to develop the reading skills of Primary School Children, distributing Usborne Dictionaries for Life or helping to support Childrens’ education in third world Countries by providing Libraries or funding secondary education to those that cannot afford it.

During August I have visited the Clubs of Newport Pagnell, Luton North, Hoddesdon, Aylesbury Hundreds and Dunstable Downs as well as attending Hitchin Tilehouse to listen to our Rotary GB&I President Debbie Hodge.  There was also the International Seminar at Tilsworth, several meetings of the various District Committees and we popped over to Dunstable to see their School Uniform project in action.  We saw lots of antique Fords at Royston’s Kite and Car Festival and the Classic Car Shows organised by Luton Someries and Potters Bar!

September kicked off with Biggleswade Ivel’s 18th Charter Celebration and is proving to be equally exciting with visits to Luton Chiltern, Amersham, Bedford’s 95th Charter celebration, the opening of Horatio’s Garden at Stoke Mandeville and my first District Council Meeting being in charge. Further visits to Hemel Hempstead, Flitwick Vale, St Albans Verulamium, Ampthill, Luton Someries and Hertford Shires are all planned together with Baldock’s 65th Charter celebration, Race Night with MK Watling, District Bowls competition and the MK Satellite’s East meets West Dinner.

I would like to take this opportunity to mention the crocus planting taking place at Stoke Mandeville on 24th October on World Polio Day and ask Clubs to contribute £10 towards the cost and for those nearby Clubs to help with the planting.  We are applying for an In-District Global Grant for a Fibroscanner used to detect Liver damage.  The scanner provides a quick and painless way of assessing liver health, in many cases replacing a painful liver biopsy operation. If Clubs would like to contribute towards this please contact myself or Paul Denton.

There are a number of workshops happening over the next few months, the first of which is Setting up a Facebook Page on 27th September at the Novotel, Stevenage. Please contact Jenny Muir if you are interested.

Please continue supporting Education and Literacy Projects wherever they may be and continue to Be The Inspiration.

Upcycling

The Rotary Club of Luton Someries collects biscuit wrappers, cream cracker, trigger grips from cleaning liquid bottles, foreign coins, ball point pens and felt tip pens.
To date they have raised over £3000 for these items which would otherwise have gone to landfill.
They signed up to a company called Terracycle.co.uk who up-cycle non-recyclable items for re-use as things like watering cans and garden chairs, which saves them polluting landfill sites.
