Inter-school Challenge 2019

Wensleydale Rotary Club gives a small sum of money to each Primary School in the Dale and challenges them to increase it by whatever means for charity.

Many congratulations to BAWB (Bainbridge – Askrigg - West Burton) school which won the School Enterprise competition.

Schools across Wensleydale were invited to participate in the challenge.

Each team was given £40 which they were expected to invest in a small start-up business, the proceeds going to a charity of their choice. This year they voted for Cancer Research UK,

5 teams entered the challenge: BAWB; Hawes; Middleham; Spennithorne; Reeth and Gunnerside.

They each made a brief presentation to a panel of 3 Rotarians and Jan Leafe, the Local Fundraising Manager for Cancer Research UK, covering what they had done to invest the money, what they had learned from the experience and how much money they had made.

Several children said they had learned new craft skills, improved their maths and understood more about making a profit. BAWB had a WW2 theme selling a broad range of crafts and cards made from recycled goods. They also sold home-made ration books and produced a newspaper for the event.

In total £805 was raised for Cancer Research. Thanks to all who participated.
