A Toast to Families First

A donation of £800 from St Andrews Wine Company and local Rotarians

It’s always good to combine learning, fundraising and fun.  The Rotary Club of St Andrews achieved this combination recently, thanks to the support of local lad and owner of the St Andrews Wine Company, Peter Wood.  After two decades trading in St Andrews, he brought his knowledge and expertise to an online wine tasting event hosted by the Rotary Club. Samples of six different wines were distributed in advance in readiness for the event.  On the evening, the participants were guided skilfully through the delights of each wine, all sourced from small family vineyards in a variety of countries – Austria, France, Italy and South Africa.

The participants were asked for a contribution to cover the cost of the wine and a donation to a local charity.  It had been agreed that the proceeds of the event would go to “Families First”, a local organisation which offers a wide range of services to children aged 5 to 16, and their families, living in North East Fife.  Families First provides volunteering opportunities offering people the chance to make a real difference to the lives of service users.  Some of their services include befriending, family support and children’s group work.  Families First has been able to respond quickly to the challenges of the pandemic by working closely with other partners and stakeholders, moving services on-line and meeting up outdoors.

£500 was donated by the contributors at the wine tasting for Families First.  As the need for family support locally has never been greater than during the last 18 months, an extra surprise bonus was met with delight by the organisers when Peter generously donated the cost of the wine.  As a result, a total of £800 was handed over to the charity.
