The GSE Team From Malawi
The GSE Team from Malawi are arriving in the District on the 18th September and are with us until 15th October. Rtn Sherrie-Jane Jackson (Langport & Somerton) is now co-ordinating all the arrangements and she needs your help in providing a balanced programme. We have details of the team and they are an interesting and well educated group.
We now need to have expressions of interest from Clubs in the District to provide the Home Hosting and Vocational activities so please contact Sherrie-Jane at sj@orchidlangport.co.uk immediately if your club would like to be involved. Clubs can provide hosting and/or vocational activities so please come forward and give the team a tour to remember and essentially some excellent learning opportunities. Once those interested in being involved are known a get together to discuss and agree the programme can be organised.
Hosting Required.Strode College are looking for host families for foreign students under their Homestay scheme, details of which can be found on their website at www.strode-college.ac.uk or by emailing studentaccommodation@strode-college.ac.uk or by telephoning Annabel Mitchell on 01458 844400. Promoting Your News.Do send to the District Webmaster your news and events, so we can assist in promoting and publishing them. Rotary Mountain Challenge.
The Rotary Club of Frome Selwood entered a team in the Rotary Sightsavers Mountain Challenge. The Freewheelers are the only team from the Rotary District 1200, which covers Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset. The challenge involved climbing Ben Nevis, Helvellyn and Snowdon mountains in the space of 24 hours. The first mountain was Ben Nevis and the Team had a start time of 2.15 pm on Saturday. Helvellyn was climbed in the middle of the night with the aid of torches. The walking team members comprised Claire Hewish (leader); Peter Bennett; Stuart Archer; Tracey Martin; and Tom Mayo. The team is supplemented by two volunteer drivers Mike Hewish and Stewart Ackland. 3 of the team members are employees of Wheeler's electrical contractors in Westbury, and the company provided substantial sponsorship. Two of the team are members of Frome Selwood Rotary Club, who also provided financial sponsorship. The team had been in training since January. The team finished the walk on Sunday evening in 28 hours 22 minutes, but actual walking time was 18 hours 22 minutes. The Team anticipate raising over £6,000 for Sightsavers. The sum of £7,500 would enable Sightsavers to train 3 nurses in India in sight saving treatment and/or surgery. Over the span of a working career their nurses will treat 35,000 people; the walk could therefore be instrumental in restoring the sight of some 100,000 people. |

Fabulous NewsThe team have now received confirmation that they have definitely won the trophy for the highest fund-raising team, and it is estimated that they have raised over £7,000!

As we look to celebrate Rotary Day on 23rd February 2011, it's a healthy, fun, community based, environmental friendly way to plant in everyone's mind, the opportunity of being part of a historic worldwide campaign, spearheaded by Rotary International, to finally eradicate Polio across the world. It's also an excuse to have a party afterwards, get a certificate of participation and generally enjoy the life we are giving others. The Ruby Giant 'purple' crocus represents the dye colour dabbed on children's little 'pinkie' finger to indicate they have been immunised against polio in the few remaining parts of the globe since Rotary International commenced its campaign in 1985. Working in partnership with The Eden Project, the International Flower Bulb Centre (IBC), The National Trust, Learning Through Landscape, and others we plan to engage thousands of volunteers to join in the Big Bulb Plant by planting millions of purple crocus bulbs in the autumn. With a headline publicity event in Trafalgar Square and the opportunity for all sites around Great Britain and Ireland to break the Guinness World Record on 2nd October, Focus on the Crocus is building communities, bridging continents. ![]() |
