Young Chef District Final 2016

The Rotary Young Chef Competition, in association with a leading olive oil company, Filippo Berio, goes from strength to strength each year, producing some superb quality cooking from young people.  Every year the Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland organise a Young Chef Competition for ‘Chefs of the Future’ aimed at secondary school children aged between 11 and 17 years.  Cooking amongst young people is a growing interest and a valuable life skill.


This is an excellent opportunity, not only for the students with an interest in food preparation, to display their skills at a competitive level, but also to promote and enhance the prestige of this area of education and at the same time affords a chance for Rotarians to work and support young people in the community.


The District Final, organised by Mike Preen of the Rotary Club of Bournemouth, was held at the Bournemouth School of Hospitality and Food, Lansdowne and we are indebted to Christophe Baffos, head of Catering, Hospitality and Tourism at the College for his enthusiastic support for this event.


There were eleven competitors at the District final, each having to create and prepare a healthy three-course meal for two, produced within two hours.  These were the winners from their local round and so the expected standard of entry is high.  Competitors were judged on their menu, organisational skills, costing, planning and time use as well as quality of outcome.

We are delighted that the District Governor, Rotarian Tony Summers was able to take time out of a busy schedule and present the competitors’ certificates and winners’ prizes.

To get to this stage means the young chefs already had to prove themselves and we wish them all every success.  The Winner and Runner-Up of this round will represent the District at the Regional Final to be held in the South Devon College, Paignton, Devon. On 12 March 2016-
