Echoes of the Past

Night of Reflection Norman Lea, a retired postman and local historian

Keynote Speaker Norman Lea

Rotary St Helens Enjoys Nostalgic Evening with 92-Year-Old Norman Lea

Last night, members of Rotary St. Helens were treated to a delightful and heart-warming talk by 92-year-old Norman Lea, a retired postman and local historian. Norman, with his incredible photographic memory, transported the audience back in time through a captivating story he crafted about the past, seen through the eyes of a grandfather recounting his early days to his young grandson. All produced in rhyme.
Norman’s story, titled "Echoes of the Past," was a nostalgic journey that struck a chord with everyone present. Through the imaginative conversation between the grandfather and grandson, Norman painted a vivid picture of life in the days long before the conveniences we take for granted today. It was a time when life moved at a slower pace, and simple things like food storage, communication, and entertainment were drastically different.
He described how, in his younger days, families relied on a larder with two marble shelves to keep food cool, instead of the modern fridges we now have. There were no mobile phones to keep in touch, no internet to browse, and certainly no television to pass the time. Instead, people gathered around the fireplace, sharing stories and enjoying each other's company.
Norman’s tale also painted a picture of the world before supermarkets became the norm. Instead of pushing trolleys down long aisles, people went to local shops to buy fresh produce. There was also no central heating to keep homes warm during the cold months; instead, families had to rely on open fires and coal stoves to heat their homes.
Throughout the evening, the audience found themselves swept up in the nostalgia of it all, as Norman’s story evoked memories of their own grandparents' lives. It was a time when life seemed simpler, and people had a stronger sense of community, even though modern conveniences were yet to come.
Norman Lea’s ability to bring these memories to life, with such clarity and vivid detail, was a testament to his remarkable photographic memory and the rich experiences he’s had throughout his 92 years. The evening was not just a trip down memory lane but a reminder of how far we’ve come and the values that have stood the test of time.
It was an evening filled with warmth, laughter, and a deep sense of appreciation for the past. The Rotary Club of St. Helens is grateful to Norman Lea for sharing his story and for keeping the echoes of the past alive in the minds of all who were there.
