This year the Plasticblitz celebrates a five-year partnership with the Environment Agency, Thames21 and Rotary. We have concentrated on the Plasticblitz project for good reasons, The Plasticblitz enables clubs to develop closer links with other local groups interested in eliminating the blight of single use plastic packaging. Packaging that clogs and contaminates our rivers, tributaries and ultimately the sea and oceans. The Plasticblitz started in Henley and we are very proud that it is now spreading
I believe that allowing plastic waste to contaminate our land and oceans will prove to be a major cause of the health problems of our modern age. Each year we learn how micro and nano-plastic are invading our bodies, bridging the cell membrane barrier and causing God knows what damage to our health. Rotary must take a lead in creating awareness, highlighting this issue and promoting good waste disposal practice.
Apart from the Plasticblitz there is much more our Rotary club can do to improve our environment. we can start are planting trees, re-wilding forgotten or past industrial areas, creating sensory gardens and developing quiet and restful areas with beautiful flower beds, trees and benches, that encourage birds, insects and hedgehogs. This type of project brings Rotary closer to your local community.
