St Albans Verulamium
Rotary has a proud history in St Albans dating back several decades. The original club, known simply as The Rotary Club of St Albans, was founded to bring together local businessmen and professionals who shared a commitment to service, leadership, and fellowship.
From the outset, the club held its meetings at lunchtime, a tradition that continues to this day. These gatherings provided a valuable opportunity for networking, planning service initiatives, and supporting both local and international causes. For many years, the club thrived with strong attendance and wide community involvement.
However, as the city evolved, so did the needs of those wishing to contribute to Rotary’s mission.
St Albans is a vibrant commuter city, with many residents travelling into London or beyond for work. While interest in Rotary remained high, the lunchtime meeting schedule presented a real barrier for those working outside the city during the day.
In response to this growing challenge, a new club was formed in 1976: the Rotary Club of St Albans Verulamium. The name “Verulamium” pays homage to the ancient Roman city that once stood on the site of modern-day St Albans — a nod to the city's rich heritage and enduring spirit of community.
St Albans Verulamium was created with a simple but important distinction: we meet in the evenings. This offered a more accessible option for busy professionals who wanted to give back but couldn’t attend during working hours.
Since then, Verulamium Rotary has built a strong and welcoming community of members who enjoy fellowship, service, and working together to improve lives — both locally and globally.
Belonging to a Rotary club is a rewarding and enjoyable way to make a meaningful contribution to your local community — and beyond. It offers friendship, purpose, and the opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself.
Here in St Albans, there’s a Rotary club to suit a variety of lifestyles and interests. Each club has its unique character and style, and you're very welcome to visit them all to see which one feels right for you.
Rotary membership is by invitation, but we begin by inviting prospective members to attend a few meetings. This allows everyone to get to know one another and explore how Rotary fits into your life and goals.
If you're curious about Rotary or interested in getting involved, we’d love to hear from you.
