The speaker for the evening was John Morris a volunteer at the Cotswold Canal Trust who gave an interesting talk on the history of the canal and the future plans for it.
The canal was first constructed and opened in 1779 and called the Stroudwater Navigation and it allowed trows to carry goods from Stroud to ports on the river Severn and also to bring in supplies. It was later extended to connect with the Thames and London.
With the advent of trains the canal use declined and it eventuale was abandoned in 1954
In 2001 the Cotswold Canal Partnership made a commitment to restore the canal. This is still an ongoing project with the hope of connecting the Stonehouse side to the Sharpness Canal constructing the missing mile and tunneling under the motorway.
John also mentioned they are always looking for volunteers not only on the canal but also in the shops and administration side.
