The District Technology Tournament took place on Friday 11 May and our local event was held again at Hollins Technology College. 39 secondary and tertiary school teams (including 4 teams of their staff) attended from Hyndburn, Ribble Valley and Blackburn making this the biggest event in the district. Its success is due to the hard work of the organising committee of Rotarians from local clubs including our own club.
President Aslam paid a visit and spoke to the teams as they were busy working on the task set. This was to construct and operate a crane that would pick up a weighted object by magnet and transport it for a specified length along a railed test track. There were 3 levels of the task dependent on the age of the teams...foundation, intermediate and advanced. We feel that this was the most challenging yet and it soon became obvious that good teamwork and careful planning was necessary to ensure completion.
The winning teams were:
Foundation: 1st- St.Augustine's Billington Team 2, 2nd- St. Bede's Blackburn Team 1.
Intermediate: 1st- Bowland High School Team 2; 2nd-Queen Elizabeth's Grammar Blackburn School Team 1
Advanced: 1st- Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, 2nd- Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School Blackburn.
Seven members of our club acted as Judges or Stewards and Franco was present to take several photos of the event. The Tournament received sponsorship from BAe Systems. The venue was kindly provided again by Hollins Technology College, Accrington and supported by their staff who ensured that the equipment required was provided together with refreshments.
