And did we learn about the history Stroud woollen textile industry  -  and did we enjoy it??

An emphatic YES to both.

Robin Mitchell and colleague Peter explained the processes of spinning and weaving at Gigg Mill.  And gave us the chance to have a try at weaving  simple pattern -  but good job that they were on hand to guide us!   And then Peter really started into the numbers game -explaining how the process just gets faster...and faster......and faster!!

Ian Mackintosh was out guide at Dunkirk Mill.   The huge water wheel - turns with just three buckets of water - but that represents over a ton of water on the overshot wheel;  fulling stocks;  to raising the nap with teasels and the chance to feel just that detail on some traditional scarlet material.

The shearing machine to trim the nap - and we learnt how that became the forerunner of the first lawn mowers that were invented in Stroud.  And of course, and opportunity to see some green billiard material - the pride of Stroud!!

Great day - thanks to the organisers, and enthusiastic guides Robin, Peter and Ian.
