'A blast from the past.'
Club members were entertained by Rotarian Peter Davis by a story from his childhood at Chalford in the 1940's.
One remarkable story with a recent twist related to two girls living with Peter's Great Aunt in Chalford. They lived in a large house without modern services of water, electricity and indoor bathroom coping without complaint during the war. When the old lady died the two orphans were rehoused and Peter always wondered what became of the two, but never found out until recently contacted by one.
She recounted to Peter that she had moved to homes outside Gloucestershire and when older had gone into domestic service lasting 50 years with one family in Essex. She prospered with the wealthy family, who afforded her travel in Europe and now in retirement a pension and home in London.
A happy and contented life, but we do not know what happened to the other girl.
