High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke. Know Your Blood Pressure day on 18 April aimed to raise awareness about the link between high blood pressure and stroke.
The two Rotary Clubs joined scores of clubs across the UK as part of the Know Your Blood Pressure Campaign in partnership with The Stroke Association and the Ambulance Service. It is estimated that every year there are approximately 152,000 strokes in the UK. That's one stroke every five minutes. Most people affected are over 65, but anyone can have a stroke, including children and even babies.
90 people benefited from the free blood pressure check and 10 of these were referred to their doctors for further investigation. 3 out of these 10 were required to see their GPs urgently. Over the past 10 years the Know Your Blood Pressure Days have saved lives of hundreds people by detecting high levels of blood pressure and thus preventing strokes.
The two Rotary Clubs are grateful to the manager and staff of the Cooperative Supermarket in Thame who hosted the event, and to the volunteer nurses who kindly gave up their time to check the blood pressure of members of the public.
