Stirling Rotary meeting 19.2.16
President Peter Mehta welcomed members, together with visitors Jim Cooper, Jan Anderson and Nele Thomas. The president will be attending the District Council meeting on March 13th. Our district, 1010, are currently keen to sponsor track and field activities for youth, within the Rotary theme of Service Above Self.
The meeting then progressed to the happy duty of inducting as a new member Jan Anderson. Proposed by Faye McPherson, Jan is of American origin, having served in the US Air Force and later the Air Force National Guard, from which she retired in 1997 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Currently, she works as a clinical director with Quotient.
Speaker for the day was our own Robin Sutton, who took as his subject My Hobby, Wood Turning. Five years ago, Robin acquired his first lathe, quickly discovering that “you get what you pay for”. In the first year, he made a few bits and pieces such as a wooden mallet, but real progress was made when he fell in with the Broxburn Woodcraft Club. 3 hour sessions are run by a craftsman on a daily basis utilising a wide range of professional equipment. This includes numerous lathes, band saws, cut off saws, planing machines, routers, sanders, buffing machines, jigsaws and a mortice drill. Every machine is equipped with powerful dust extraction and there is additional air filtration in the roof, so the atmosphere is kept clean. Each session ends with a thorough cleaning of the whole work area. At all times, Health and Safety matters receive proper attention.
Robin brought along some impressive items he had produced himself, including goblets, apples, pens and a Harry Potter wand, complete with integrated light. The Vote of Thanks was offered by Jim Kerr and well supported. This week’s Speakers Host is Tommy Thomson, with Visitors Host Ian Richardson. Stirling Rotary welcomes new members.
