The District 1230 Senior Final of Youth Speaks was held at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall on Sunday 21 February.
Our Club was represented by Hutchesons' Grammar School.
Pictured Left to Right Charles Forbes ( Speaker) Mark Fisher ( Vote of
Thanks) Olivia McCann (Chairperson).
All three are well known to us through their participation in our own Glasgow Schools Public Speaking Competition; Charlie having been the winner in 2014.
Their subject was " A load of Rubbish"
Charlie gave an excellent presentation on "Our throwaway society;" Radio active waste; plastic items, recycling and indeed the introduction in some European countries of "package free shopping."
They also emphasised the responsibility of Society as a whole, Local Councils and Government.
Eight Teams participated with The Hutchesons' Grammar School coming a very close second to the winners- a team from Duncanrig Secondary School ( East Kilbride).
Both teams go forward to the Regional Final ( Scotland and The North East of
England) to be held a Dukes Middle School, in Alnwick, Northumberland on Sunday 13 March.
This was the first time that the team had participated in this format and Mark Fisher was a late replacement for Annie Gould whose flight back from India on a School Exchange had been rescheduled. With a few weeks to prepare and indeed the added "pressure" of having to study for Advance Higher Examinations somewhat "reduced", we anticipate the Team from Hutchesons' Grammar School giving a good account of themselves at the Regional Final,
Bill Christie
