Young Photographer 2016

A double success for the Billericay School's Chloe Woodland in local and District Young Photographer competitions

“Beauty is in the eye of ….”

The 2016 Young Photographer competition, organised by club Youth Officer James Ilesley at both Rotary’s Local and District 1240 level, has provided a double success for Billericay’s Chloe Woodland.

She was judged winner of the local competition to win a prize of £50 (see her photos above).  Runner-up was Jessica Tordeur  (£25), and third prize of £15 went to Emma Roper.

Highly commended was Kara Martin who also won the Photographic Assignments Best Photograph Award and a prize of £30.

The competition asked each entrant to present a set of three photographs on a common theme of “The world is beautiful”, showing different aspects of the subject and exploiting different technical and artistic skills. Judging of the local competition took place at Ilesley Photographic, and was performed by James Ilesley of Ilesley Photographic, Mark Benson of Photographic Assignments, and Peter Greene as a keen amateur.

Nearly 100 photographs were submitted and the best ten competitors went forward to the final judging.  All ten finalists were examined separately in detail, with all their documentation, and all three photographs examined carefully and evaluated individually by each judge.

Unanimous Decision

Some entries had to be eliminated because only one photograph had been submitted and others were marked down through incomplete descriptions or explanations of how and why the photographs were taken.  There was consensus on the top four and these were then examined side by side to establish a winner, and rank them all.  After difficult consultation, the judges were unanimous in the winning set and the order of the other three.

District Final

Chloe then went onto the District final, in which there were three competitors in total, from Southend-on-Sea, Canvey, and Billericay.   Of the three, Kate Blandford from Southend-on-sea, and Chloe Woodland  stood out. Again, after a difficult and careful analysis of the two portfolios and some extensive evaluation, the judges finally agreed on Chloe as the winner.

She wins a half day in a commercial photographic studio courtesy of Photographic Assignments.
