Logie - The First 1000 Years

Rotary club of Stirling meeting of 4th November 2016.

President Alan Rankin welcomed two visitors, PP Peter Hector of the Rotary club of Chantries Guildford, and our speaker Eleanor Young.

Our meeting on 11/11/16 will be a special general meeting to elect next year's office bearers, and there will be a meeting of council on 14/11/16.  The proposed golf outing at Gullane will be on 13/11/16.

Sport's convener Colin Bayes reported a defeat in our curling match against Br of Allan, but another win in the Gavel this time against Carse of Stirling. Faye McPherson asked for another good turnout at 2pm on Tuesday at Stirling Station to finish the Winter planting.  Our heat of the Primary school quiz will be held on 21st April 2017 at Stirling university.

Our speaker, retired teacher Eleanor Young, talked to us about Logie Church and her book, Logie, The First 1000 Years. The present church is only 200 years old but the original church dates from 1598, and prior to this the village of Pathfoot on the main route South was an important cattle market before Falkirk market was established in 1785. In addition to the many ancient gravestones in the old burial ground, there are standing stones and two 1000 year old "Viking' hogback stones in the area.  The area around the old church had become totally overgrown, and £160,000 was raised allowing a major clearance of the churchyard to take place. This required much hard work, but many interesting old gravestones were discovered, including some which had been laid in the floor of the old church before the Reformation banned this practice.
The vote of thanks was given by Jim Kerr.

Our meeting on 11th November will be a special general meeting to elect our office bearers for next year. Visitor's host Philip Allison. For further information www.stirling.rotary1010.org
