Club Meeting 19th September 2018

Talk on Wheelpower, induction of new member and presentation of long service award

Leah Lewis gave an illustrated talk on the charity Wheelpower

WheelPower is the national charity for wheelchair sport. It is based at Stoke Mandeville Stadium and has recently celebrated 70 years of the Paralympic Games. It is also a Rotary partner organisation. Our speaker, Leah Lewis outlined the charity’s recent activities and developments. Last year, around 485,000 people played sport at the stadium of which just over 47,000 were disabled. The charity funds six Physical Activity Advisors which are based in different centres. They support newly paralysed people and the charity would like to extend these activities to more centres.  Among its many activities, WheelPower also organises the Inter Spinal Unit Games where teams from each spinal unit in the country compete.

Before the talk the President, Richard McKeen, inducted Mike Barden into the club and presented Dieter Shaw with a long service award for his 35 years in Rotary.
