Peter's grandfather, William P Firth, served in the Royal Artillery from the age of 14 to the age of 38.
. He left the army in 1907 having served nearly 24 years in postings in Irelend, Gibraltar, India, St. Helena and in the Boer War in South Africa. At the start of WW1, at the age of 45, he re-enlisted and served in the UK until 1918, when he was posted to France and served there and in Belgium, seeing active service on the Western Front in the final months of the war.
