Message from our President Debbie
Dear Friends of Rotary
I hope you are all keeping safe and well in these extraordinary times.
I wanted to thank you for your continued interest in Wareham Rotary, and to many of you for your support and help with our projects over the last few years.
There are two projects that the Club is undertaking within the next few weeks, our Shoebox Collection and also our annual collection of unwanted tools for the Tools for Self Reliance charity.
The collection of unwanted tools will be held on Saturday 17 October 2020 in the car park at the Sandford Hotel between 9.30am and 11am, so please check out your sheds and garages to see if you have any tools you do not need anymore.
The tools will be sorted and later delivered to the Tools for Self Reliance depot in Netley Marsh near Southampton.
All tools but gardening tools will be very gratefully received.
Sewing machines are especially welcome, and also lengths of fabric.
All the donated tools will be refurbished at the charity at Netley Marsh by volunteers, some of whom have learning or mental health difficulties, then the tools will be put together in sets in boxes, and when a container full of tool sets is ready, it is transported to one of six African countries.
With the tools will be someone from the charity who will teach the local people in Africa how to use the tools by undertaking a community project (like building a village hall) and when this is done and the local people have the skills they need, they will be given a full box of refurbished tools to start up their own businesses.
As you can imagine - this will be life changing for the recipients and will give them the opportunity of a job for life, to support themselves and their families, and the charity also makes a huge difference to the volunteers from Netley too, it really is a win-win situation.
We will also be collecting Shoeboxes filled with gifts for children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Romania. Some of the boxes will be sent to the Philippines, courtesy of the Purple Community Fund.
I always enjoy putting a couple of shoeboxes together each year, and should you also like to do the same I attach a leaflet with this email which clearly sets out what can be included and cannot be included in each box.
The shoeboxes should each be wrapped with Christmas paper like a present, but the lid and box should be wrapped separately so that each box can be checked by Customs without damage if needed.
You will need to choose whether the box should be for a boy or girl, and for what age range.
There is one part of the leaflet which should be cut out and stuck on the top of the box, where you circle which age range and sex you have chosen, and also put a £1 coin on the top of the box which will help to pay for the transportation.
Once you have completed your boxes, please let a Rotarian know, or put the box into my porch at 148 Northmoor Way, Wareham BH20 4EU before 5 November 2020.
My porch is also a collection point for unwanted tools if you cannot make the Tools Collection on 17 October.
Meanwhile, please keep safe and well, and hope to see you in person as soon as it is safe to do so.
Yours in Rotary
