Support for Young Carers

Award of Grant to support Covid-19 response

Rotary Club of Bradford on Avon is pleased to be able to continue supporting the Wiltshire Young Carers and to assist in their response to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

As part of the national award winning ‘Youth Arm’ of Community First and Youth Action Wiltshire, Wiltshire Young Carers’ objective is to improve the lives of Wiltshire’s young people & to support them to reach their full potential. Wiltshire Young Carers Service provides individual support plans, regular respite sessions, personalised one to one work through coaching & mentoring plus advocacy with schools, housing, healthcare & signposting or referrals to other support agencies.  They support children & young people who have significant caring responsibilities for someone in their family who is ill or disabled, including physical disabilities, mental health issues, substance misuse, sensory impairment, chronic illness & learning disability. They understand that challenges such as having a significant caring role, isolation, mental health issues, family poverty or bullying can negatively impact a young person’s confidence & self-esteem. Without interventions, this can affect young people’s attainment & future aspirations.  The Covid-19 Pandemic has cause them to change the way they provide that service.

The WYC team has quickly adapted to the changes to maintain an effective support service to their young carers including providing access to foodbanks, free school meal vouchers, advocacy, signposting & referral to other support providers for those in need.

By identifying young people that required ongoing one to one support with a Young Carers Support worker to help them to manage the effects & implications of Lockdown, including increased caring role, their mental health & wellbeing, managing school work, managing family relationships & controlling anxiety & depression they have been able to created & piloted a menu of remote 1:1 support & fun, informal online group webinar opportunities, to enable young people to continue to engage with support staff & their peers.

Rotary Club of Bradford on Avon’s support will help the team to increase and develop their capacity to provide a support to the growing demand for one to one and remote support services.
