Haddenham Junior School have opened their prize winning Forest School Project
In attendance to officially cut the opening ‘Conker Ribbon’
was Tim Mahoney, President of Haddenham and District Rotary
and David Rankin, also from Haddenham and District Rotary, and the HJS tree warden
who assists with Forest School sessions two afternoons each week during term time
David recognised the benefits accruing to children who derive important life skills from participation in the Forest School and approached Haddenham and District Rotary to secure support for the project
An area on HJS grounds was identified and David promptly then erected the new fence
assisted by his son and Haddenham and District Rotary Honourary Member, Geoffrey
Mrs Caroline Armstead, Haddenham Junior School’s specialist Forest School teacher:
"Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process
that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions in the outdoors
It is a long-term program that supports play and exploration
and supported risk taking"
"The Forest School develops confidence and self-esteem
through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting"
"Children learn to make sensible, informed decisions
about how to tackle the activities and experiences they encounter
They're learning to be self-sufficient and take care of themselves,
which boosts their confidence and self-esteem"
Mr Leach, Headteacher of Haddenham Junior School:
"It simply wouldn’t have been possible to get this new project off the ground
without the support and financial assistance from Haddenham Rotary
We are very grateful indeed and know that this fantastic new facility
will benefit many children in the future"
"This new ‘outdoor classroom’ is a specially selected area
separated from the rest of the school playing field by a new fence
The new fenced area provides a safe but natural setting
or Forest School life education teaching sessions"
