2021-22 Pinner Rotary Club Activities

June

7th: Speaker Meeting – a presentation by the wildlife photographer Tom Way about "Wildlife in Africa" at Pinner Hill Golf Club. A large audience of members, partners and friends were enthralled by Tom’s amazing photographs which were also on sale. 

14th: Guided walk with Thamar Maciver entitled "Famous Women of Pinner" followed by supper at Turquoise in Pinner High Street. Very interesting walk which included learning about some Pinner ladies who were active suffragettes in the early 20th century

28th : The annual Presidents Handover Meeting including supper was held at Pinner Hill Golf Club. This well attended meeting congratulated our very popular out-going President Cathy Kim who has performed the role exceptionally well during the pandemic and with some particularly difficult personal circumstances. Our new President, Tony Moore, takes over our club which is in very good shape!

May

7th: Rotary held it's first face-to-face quiz for 3 years. This well attended event, including Rotarians from other nearby clubs, enjoyed a quiz presented by Alan & Hilary Coulson. Some of the money raised has been donated to the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre at Mount Vernon Hospital where both a new MRI and PET-CT scanners are being puchased this year.

April

5th : Pinner Rotarian Subhash Anand presented "Life Often Hangs by a Thread" to members at our club meeting in Pinner Hill Golf Club.

24th : A large crowd enjoyed good weather and great entertainment at the Pinner Rotary St George's Day Celebration.

March

15th : David Simmons, the MP for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner was our speaker for a well attended club meeting at Pinner Hill Golf Club.

16th : Members of Pinner Rotary visited Forest School which is based in the grounds of All Saints Church, Harrow Weald. This follows our donation to them which we were able to make with some of the money collected during Santa’s Sleigh in December 2021.

18th : A number of Pinner Rotarians and partners attended the annual District Conference in Oxford.

February

1st : A speaker meeting with Simon Braidman who is a local naturalist, a warden of Stanmore Marsh and co-founder of Harrow Nature Heroes. He is a committee member of Friends of Pinner Village Gardens and is working on a project to increase biodiversity in Pinner Recreation Ground, the small park next to the railway in West End Lane.

22nd : Social evening slotcar racing (Scalextrics) in Northwood Hills followed by curry. Glyn won the trophy for champion driver!

January

11th : Induction of new member Richard Paler.

20th : Young Chef competition at Vyners School.

25th : Burns Night. Our annual celebration of the Scottish poet Robert Burns with haggis and bagpipes and all the customary entertainment.

December

7th : Speaker meeting with comedienne Lucy Porter. Lucy Porter is a well-known actress, writer and comedian who lives in Pinner. She has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, the Brighton Festival and many clubs around Britain. She regularly appears on QI, Room 101, Live at the Apollo and on Radio 4 panel shows including News Quiz and The Now Show. Lucy gave us a highly entertaining talk about how she started as a stand up comic and some of the highs and lows of her career.

14th : SGM and Business Meeting on Zoom.

13th - 22nd : Santa's Sleigh

21st : Christmas Collection at Morrisons Supermarket.

21st : Christmas Dinner. 

November

2nd : Fireworks party and supper at President Cathy's house

14th : Remembrance Sunday. Pinner Rotarians helped with stewarding and our President laid a wreath.

19th : Visit to Pinner Wood School to see their new Media Centre, Pinner Rotary made a contribution towards the new equipment.

23rd : Speaker meeting with Andrew Opie. Andrew is Director of Food & Sustainability at the British Retail Consortium, working with the major supermarkets and government. He gave a fascinating talk about his work over the last 18 months - his involvement in Brexit, Covid and recent issues with the supply chain.

October

5th : Speaker meeting with DG Karen Eveleigh and the induction of new member Urvashi Patel.

19th : Speaker meeting with Rob Smith talking about "Food Factories of London".

27th : Charter Evening at Friends Restaurant

September

7th : Speaker Meeting: Harrow Samaritans, our President's main charity for the year 

11th : Pinner Village Show

28th : A visit to Romulo Café & Restaurant in Kensington High Street for a taste of Filipino food. Organised by John and Melinda.

August

1st : We had a membership stand at one of the Pinner Association band concerts in the Memorial Park.

8th : Summer Garden Party at the home of David & Pat Bays

17th : Speaker Meeting "Blessed are the Cheese Makers" – a talk by John Pearson

24th : Wine tasting and supper at President Cathy's house with Tony as our Sommelier

July

2nd : Tom led us on a circular walk from Rickmansworth along the canal, ending up in the Feathers for lunch.

11th & 14th : Weeding the flower troughs in Pinner and Pinner Green, led by our Environment Officer Anne.

20th : Our first club meeting post lockdown. Brian Jonson came to talk about the End Plastic Soup initiative.

27th : Malcolm led us on a guided walk around Victoria Embankment / Strand, the old riverside. Ending in an Italian restaurant.
